Overview

Philander Smith University (formerly Philander Smith College) is a historically private black university located in Little Rock, Arkansas, founded in 1877. The school offers 21 undergraduate majors and one graduate program covering education, business, social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. The teacher education program of the School of Education is accredited by the American Council for the Accreditation of Educational Preparation (CAEP), emphasizes the training of culturally adaptable teachers, and is committed to improving the quality of teaching for students in diverse urban and rural areas. In addition, the school also offers a 3+2 engineering dual degree program in cooperation with the University of Arkansas, and a 4+1 public health program in cooperation with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, School of Public Health, providing students with interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
